Coming Full Circle

Have you ever noticed how things run in cycles? Patterns? It’s as if we’re on a high school track. We run around the same path, over and over, conquering different lessons throughout life. Often though, God sets us down at the starting block, only to complete the race and discover the finish line is similar to the very place we started. I see it as one of the many ways God weaves my life together, He makes seemingly unrelated things meet together in such harmonious ecstasy.

I’m seeing a pattern, a cycle, a race track within Ephesians. I’m no scholar; I’m sure several people have already discovered this pattern and can write about it with much more eloquence than I could ever dream. Let’s see if I can put words to what God is stirring within me. Shall we?

Something great and wonderful and, holy cow awesome, something we so often forget and refuse to embrace, is that we have a mighty power at work within us. As you read through Ephesians 1:13-19, you see that as believers, we have been marked with a seal, the Holy Spirit. mercy_came_running-title-3-still-4x3This seal comes with a gift, the incomparable great power of God for those who believe. That’s you and me.

Eh. Big deal.

Well, not really. This is the very same power that raised Jesus from the dead. The very same power that raised us out of sin and death and into life.

That power is living in you still. It didn’t stop the moment you believed! Why is this so important? I’m glad you asked. Because according to chapter 3 verse 16, we are to be strengthened with power through the Spirit so that Christ’s love can dwell in us.

This love is important, earth-shattering important, because once we realize how much God loves us, we have the freedom to approach his throne room with confidence. With, dare I say, boldness? This love gives us the freedom to rest, to sit, to be released from the burden of having to be strong on our own. Which is important for the next leg of the race.

Continuing on in Ephesians 6:10, we are told to “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” We need this power because we are commanded to stand against the devil’s schemes. One of those schemes, by the way, is to reduce your confidence in God’s power within you.

Jesus himself prayed for us in John 17:15 regarding the evil one:

“I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one.” ~John 17:15

Because Jesus asked for our protection from the evil one, that tells me we will face our adversary on a regular basis. Which means we need to be strong in the Lord’s power because we can’t stand against Satan on our own.

God has not left us empty handed, without knowledge of how to tap into this power: his power comes alive in us when we yield the sword of the spirit, his Word.

You may think we’ve come to the end of our race, but here is where it cycles back to the beginning. How do we really stand against the evil one on a daily basis?

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” ~Ephesians 1:3

We are blessed with spiritual blessings.

These are not the kind of blessings we usually see on an everyday basis. Not that we can’t see them. Not that they aren’t there. They’re just not the kind of blessing we usually ask for: money, position, status, possessions, security or health. It’s in the spiritual realm. And one of the “every spiritual blessings” is that of the Holy Spirit.  We are marked with the Holy Spirit. This is the very thing through which we have incomparable power at work within us.

Full circle.

Good stuff, huh?

How are you running your race?  Are you running on fumes or on a full tank of God’s power at work within you?

To God be the glory. All my love.

  1. Life is filled with cycles and I love that you have pointed our eyes to this in Paul’s writing to the Ephesians. If we recognize the cycles and walk in harmony with them, we have the opportunity to grow in God’s grace and experience His mighty power. Blessed to read your post.
