It’s hard for me to write about love this week- sometimes the world seems so bleak and grim that meditating on goodness and light seems foolish. But there has always been tragedy and darkness; we need to constantly remind ourselves that “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5) In the midst of persecution and trial, love is a major theme in John’s writings. These are only a few of John’s words on love.
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” ~1 John 3:1
“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” ~1 John 3:16-18
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.” ~1 John 4:7-12
If you are feeling soul-sick and weary this week, pray with me.
Father God, give us an awareness of your love, not just for us, but for all the soul-sick and weary in the world. Lord Jesus, surround us with this love that caused You to lay down Your life and to bring us in as children. Let us find rest; feel our burdens relieved by Your love. Let us find peace and solace in Your love that eclipses our understanding. Protect us in Your love. Then let an outpouring come out of us in power. Let us lay our lives down, be places of rest and peace, love in a way the recipient can’t comprehend. Let us protect and bless each other in love. Let us love our brothers and sisters in a way that they may see You.
