The doll was expensive. I’d spent the last hour on the American Girl doll website. Christmas was coming and I wanted our daughter to have a special gift. Shipping was free only today. Still, I couldn’t do it.
2012 was trying for us. With my husband sick and not working, we’d survived financially on the generosity of friends and family.
I’ll think about it. Free shipping lasts all day.
Later that morning my phone buzzed. “Hi, Mrs. Warshak. Would you stop by the school office today? There’s something here for you.”
Hmm. I didn’t order anything, but okay. “Sure.”
When I got to office, the school secretary reached under the counter for three boxes. Inside I saw gifts wrapped in three different patterns of paper. Tears filled my eyes.
“From your Christmas Angels,” she said with a smile. “And this one is for you.” She handed me a red envelope.
Inside was a card explaining the gifts. “Merry Christmas! The blue gifts are for Jack, the green are for Luke, and the pink are for Emma. Feel free to exchange anything you’d like. There are receipts for everything, except the American Girl doll.”
What??? How did they know? Lord, you are so good!
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. ~Luke 2:10-11
Dear God, thank you for providing our every need. And although you don’t have to, thank you for giving us the desires of our hearts. Above all, thank you for the gift of your one and only son, Jesus, the reason we celebrate Christmas.
Do you recall a time when God provided one or more gifts and you were amazed at His provision and His perfect timing? Take a few moments and think back over the years, then make a list. All too quickly we forget His good gifts.
Remember the wondrous works that He has done.” ~1 Chronicles 16:12
Pause. Praise Him. Pass along the blessing. You may not be able to purchase gifts for an entire family but perhaps you could bake cookies, prepare a small candy jar, or make a homemade meal for a sick neighbor or friend. Ask God to show you one person or family that you might be able to bless and encourage during this Christmas season.
