Waiting for God’s Sovereign Plan

Are you waiting on the Lord for some specific answer right now? Have you been waiting for weeks, months, even years? If so, there may be days – perhaps today – when you wonder if you can hold much longer. The glimmer of hope is fading and deep in your heart you consider this particular wait too long and difficult. john-mark-arnold-18039-unsplash

We are reading portions of scripture that have given glimpses into the lives of real people who trusted in God’s sovereign plan. Yet, they faced difficulties, trials, and years of waiting for His plan and purpose to become reality in their lives.

Abraham was called by God when he was 75 years old and God promised to make him a great nation. He followed in obedience but there were bumps in the road along the way. Time continued to march on and Abraham still did not have a child. Would the Lord’s promises truly come to pass?

“Go from your country … to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” ~Genesis 12:1-3

And then, consider the story of Joseph’s life. I marvel at this young man’s resolve to walk in integrity. His own brothers sold him into slavery and he found himself in several difficult situations spread over years of time. Yet, God did not forget him but rather gave him favor with each person he served under.

“But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.” ~Genesis 39:21

I need to remember that my loving Heavenly Father is at work behind the scenes, and He will bring together every detail and each promise according to His sovereign plan. He does not forget. He is never in a hurry. And, He will complete the work He has begun in each of our hearts and lives.

Besides Abraham and Joseph, consider God’s sovereign work in the lives of Moses, David, Mary, Peter, and Paul. God used each of these individuals to bring His perfect and excellent plan to pass – His sovereignty on display. God’s eye is always on His people. He will not turn away and He does not forget us.

How do we stand strong and cling to the sovereignty of God in times of waiting?

  • Choose to focus on the Lord every day
  • Meditate on specific Bible verses that build up your hope and trust in the Lord
  • Seek out close friends who will pray with you during difficult time(s)
  • Practice gratitude – Each day, list 3 new blessings God has given to you
